DIY – Turn your favorite band T-shirt into a dress

Because I wear more dresses than trousers, buying another band t-shirt is only making the inside of my closet look good. So this time when I saw the band merchandise at the Monster Truck concert (blogged about that here) I figured I would go with the largest t-shirt they had and make myself a dress.

And I am so happy with the result, having a one of a kind Monster Truck dress! Want to make a dress out of the t-shirt of your favorite band? Check out what I did!

What you need

– an XL (the bigger the better) t-shirt of your favorite band
– 2 old t-shirts or scraps of t-shirt fabric in the same color as the t-shirt
– needle, thread, scissors, sewing machine

What you do

I will tell you what I did but you can adapt to your own preferences and size.
1. Start by cutting off the sleeves at the seams

2. Now put on the t-shirt inside out and depending how much of the sides you want to take in – pin this and sew

3. Put on the t-shirt again and decide how long you want your dress to be, so you know how much fabric you want to add at the bottom of the t-shirt
4. Take the old t-shirts or shirt fabric and cut off/out the bottom edge/a piece of fabric as large as the missing length of the dress-to be, plus the seam value (about 3 cm). In my case, I needed the bottoms of 2 old t-shirts, 1 to lengthen the front, 1 to lengthen the back. I made the front a bit shorter than the back
5. Now pin and sew the extra fabric on the bottom of t-shirt. Make sure the t-shirt faces right-side out and you pin and sew the pieces of fabric with the right sides facing
6. Once the t-shirt is longer decide if you want to close the sides or leave them open. I only sew 1.5 cm of the sides of the extra fabric on the bottom. The rest is open (of course I hemmed the seams). And if you didn’t use the bottoms of old t-shirts you can hem the fabric or leave it for a more ‘rock ‘n roll’ look 😉
7. About the arm holes: I made sure the armholes weren’t looking awkward, extra fabric was cut or sewn away. Plus I folded the top of the arm holes and sewed it on top of the shoulders with a few stitches, to give it a ‘rolled sleeves’ look. But you can also leave the arm holes as they are, or even cut them a bit wider, that also depends on what you like and what kind of t-shirt you bought
8. Ready to rock this dress!!

Doe-het-zelf – Van favo band t-shirt naar favo band jurkje

Omdat ik meer jurkjes draag dan broeken, zorgde het kopen van nog een band t-shirt ervoor dat alleen de binnenkant van m’n kast er mooier van werd. Dus dit keer besloot ik, toen ik de merchandise zag bij het Monster Truck concert (check de blog over het concert hier), het grootste t-shirt te kopen en er een jurk van te maken.

Dit heb je nodig

– een XL (hoe groter hoe beter) t-shirt van je favoriete band
– 2 oude t-shirts of t-shirtstof in dezelfde kleur als het t-shirt
– naald, draad, schaar, naaimachine

Dit doe je

Ik zal je hieronder laten zien wat ik deed, maar je kan het natuurlijk aanpassen naar jouw voorkeur en maat.
1. Begin met het afknippen van de mouwen bij de mouwinzet
2. Draai het shirt binnenstebuiten en trek het aan, zodat je kan bepalen hoeveel je de zijkant in wil nemen – speld het en naai het af
3. Doe het shirt opnieuw aan en bekijk hoe lang je wil dat het jurkje wordt, zodat je weet hoeveel stof er nodig is om het shirt op de juiste lengte te krijgen
4. Pak de oude t-shirts of t-shirtstof erbij en knip de onderkant/een stuk uit. Zo veel als wat er nu nog mist aan de onderkant, plus een naadwaarde (ongeveer 3 cm). In mijn geval heb ik de onderkanten van twee oude shirts afgeknipt, een voor de voorkant en een voor de achterkant. De voorkant heb ik iets korter gemaakt dan de achterkant
5. Speld en naai de extra stof aan de onderkant van het shirt. Zorg ervoor dat het t-shirt met de goede kant naar buiten gekeerd is en dat je de stof met de goede kanten op elkaar vastspeld en naait
6. Als je het shirt langer gemaakt hebt kun je bekijken of je de zijkanten dicht wil naaien of open wil laten. Ik heb maar 1,5 cm van de aangezette onderkanten aan de zijkant vastgenaaid. De rest heb ik open gelaten (ik heb wel even de zoompjes netjes afgewerkt). En als je niet de onderkant van een oud shirt hebt gebruikt, maar t-shirtstof kun je ook nog de onderkant omzomen. Maar je kan de onderkant ook onafgewerkt laten, voor een ‘rock ‘n roll look 😉
7. Wat betreft de armsgaten: ik heb ervoor gezorgd dat deze er niet gek uitzien of ergens raar lubberen, extra stof is weggeknipt of vastgenaaid. Daarnaast heb ik de bovenkant omgevouwen en met een paar losse steken vastgenaaid op de schouders, om het een ‘opgerolde mouwen look’ te geven. Maar je kan de armsgaten ook zo laten of zelfs verder uitknippen, het ligt eraan wat jij leuk vindt en wat past bij het shirt dat je gekocht hebt
8. Helemaal klaar om m’n bandjurk te rocken!!
