Valentines Bag full of Kisses – DIY

I am not a romantic type. I may even be the opposite of a romantic person. I like flowers, but because of their durability I prefer plants. I love chocolate…that has the shape of a big Tony Chocolonely bar. I rarely wear perfume, I think because of my hypersensitive nose. Pretty hard for the boyfriend, isn’t it? Maybe that is why we never really celebrate Valentines Day. Me, as a really non-romantic girl, still wanted to do a Valentine DIY. So I combined a tough fabric with a sweet embroidery which resulted in the bag you see in the picture. A bag filled with lots of kisses and a love.

What you need – for the bag

– denim fabric (light fabric)
– needle, thread, sewing machine
– pins and fabric chalk

What you need – for the embroidery

– printed heart cross stitch pattern (download here)
– red embroidery thread (I used cotton knitting thread)
– pins

What you do – for the bag

1. First check the size sheet for the bag here
2. Start by drawing the ‘bag part’ (a 32 cm x 86 cm rectangle) and the ‘handle part’ (a 5 cm x 65 cm rectangle) on the back side of the fabric with fabric chalk

3. Cut the fabric with an 1 cm border around the lines you have drawn, except for the smaller sides of the ‘bag part’. That is going the be the top of the bag and needs a border of at least 3 cm
4. Pin the ‘bag part’ fabric, right sides facing each other by folding the fabric in the middle
5. Pin the ‘handle part’ fabrics also with the right sides facing each other by folding the fabric lengthwise

6. Now sew the longer sides of the ‘bag part’ following the lines you have drawn. Leave the top open (otherwise it isn’t a bag :))

7. To avoid fraying, secure the edges of the fabric with a zig-zag stitch (check picture)

8. Sew the side of the ‘handle parts’

9. Now turn the handles right side out
10. Pin one side of one handle on the inside of the bag. Place it 3 cm from the top and 5 cm from the side (check picture)

11. The other side of the first handle should be pinned in the same way but mirrored
12. Sew the handles on the bag
13. Repeat step 10, 11 and 12 for the other side of the back
14. Still work with the wrong side facing you – now fold the top of the bag (about 2 cm) so at the top border the wrong sides face each other and sew (check picture)

15. Fold it again so the top of your bag looks nice even on the inside and sew at least one round

16. Fold the handles so they face up. Now sew the handles on the inside

What you do – for the embroidery

1. Take the print with the cross-stitch and pin it on the bag, where the embroidery should come

2. Start working the cross-stitches

3. Remove the paper
4. Tadaaa, your lovely bag is ready for Valentines Day

Valentijnstas met Geborduurd Hart – doe-het-zelf

Ik ben niet echt romantisch. Het zou zelfs kunnen zijn dat ik het tegenovergestelde ben van romantisch. Ik hou van bloemen, maar ik heb liever planten omdat deze langer blijven leven. Ik hou van chocolade…in de vorm van een grote Tony Chocolonely reep. Ik draag amper parfum, m’n neus is hypersensitief. Best lastig voor het vriendje, toch? Misschien daarom dat we nooit Valentijnsdag vieren. Ik, als onromantisch meisje, wilde wel graag een Valentijns doe-het-zelf  doen. Vandaar dat ik een stoer stofje gecombineerd heb met een schattig borduurwerkje om een Valentijnstas te maken. Een tas vol met kusjes en veel liefde.

Dit heb je nodig – voor de tas

– spijkerstof (lichte stof)
– naald, draad en naaimachine
– spelden en stofkrijt

Dit heb je nodig – voor het borduurwerk

– een printje van het borduurpatroon (download hier)
– rood borduurdraad (ik heb katoenen breigaren gebruikt)
– spelden

Dit doe je – voor de tas

1. Begin met het bekijken van de afmetingen van de te knippen stukken hier
2. Begin met het tekenen van het ‘tas gedeelte’ (32 x 86 cm grote rechthoek) en het ‘hengsel gedeelt’ (5 x 65 cm grote rechthoek) op de achterkant van de stof met stofkrijt
3. Knip de stof met een rand van 1 cm om de getekende lijnen die je op de stof getekend hebt. Behalve de korte kanten van het tas gedeelte. Dat wordt de bovenkant van de tas en houdt daarom daar een 3 cm brede rand aan
4. Speld de zijkanten van het ‘tas gedeelte’ aan elkaar met de binnenkant buiten door ‘m in de breedte dubbel te vouwen
5. Speld de twee ‘hengsel gedeelten’ ook met de goede kant naar binnen door ze in de lengte dubbel te vouwen
6. Naai nu de twee gespelde langere kanten van de tas vast. De bovenkant open laten (anders is het geen tas ;))
7. Om ervoor te zorgen dat de stof niet gaat rafelen werk je de randen van de zijkanten af met een zigzagsteek (zie foto)

8. Naai de zijkant van de hengsels
9. Draai nu de hengsels binnenstebuiten (best een gepriegel)
10. Speld nu een kant van het hengsel aan de binnenkant van de tas. Ongeveer op 3 cm van de bovenkant en 5 cm van de zijkant (zie foto)

11. Speld de andere kant van het eerste hengsel op dezelfde manier, maar dan gespiegeld
12. Naai de hengsels aan de tas vast
13. Herhaal de stappen 10, 11 en 12 voor het andere hengsel
14. Werk nog steeds met de tas binnenstebuiten. Vouw de bovenkant (ongeveer 2 cm) de tas naar binnen en naai het vast (zie foto)

15. Vouw de bovenkant nog een keer zodat bovenkant van de tas er ook mooi uitziet aan de binnenkant en naai ook deze vast
16. Vouw de hengsels zodat deze naar boven wijzen en naai de hengsels aan de binnenkant vast.

Dit doe je – voor het borduurwerk

1. Pak de print erbij en speld deze op de tas op de plek waar het borduurwerk moet komen
2. Werk alle kruissteken af
3. Verwijder het papier
4. Tadaaa, je schattige Valentijnstas is klaar!
