Banksy – art for everyone

You probably heard about Banksy before, especially this month, but let me still give a small introduction.
Banksy is a street artist ‘without a face’, based in England. It must be pretty hard to imagine, but after 23 years, he still isn’t identified, and as far as I know, he doesn’t want to. His graffiti art can be seen throughout the whole world, but most of his art is concentrated in the UK.

He started this month, October, with a special stay in New York and he posts a picture or movie of an artwork every day. You can check the special website on his New York adventure, with probably an update every day while he is doing his New York thing. Also funny to do is to follow the news around the things he makes. I just saw a news update that one of his recent artworks estimated worth is 1 million dollars and it needs 24 hour protection, crazy it is!

But there is so much more he has made that is truly great. One piece that I really like is what he did in the British Museum in 2005. He placed a piece of his own art on the wall without people noticing it. The funny thing is, the piece of art , Early man goes to the market  (a piece of rock with ‘cave art’ on it), hang 3 days on the wall before it got removed.  And he recently hang art on the street, completed with a guard and audio guide. He wrote about it: “People ask why I want to have an exhibition in the streets, but have you been to an art gallery recently? They’re full.” Check it out here. So far the hard facts, further with what I think of it.
Graffiti art does ‘normally’ not get as easy any art-credits as paintings or sculptures for example do. As far as I can tell, Banksy is pretty special, because his projects are higly valued. He uses a medium that can easily be re-painted or cleaned and that is exactly what he wants. My interpretation is dat he doesn’t want his artwork to be sold for money, he wants to make art that is available for everyone. If you know your arts or not, if you have the money or not, you can stumble upon his work and check it out. He not only mocks the standards of the art industry by decorating a city wall instead of canvas, the art itself is like flashing traditional art experts the bird.

Personally, I think art should not be approached with low voice and treated as special, just because someone thinks it is special. Of course it is useful to have a little bit of knowledge about the time the art was made and maybe even the meaning, but in the end it should be something that moves you (doesn’t matter in what way). I get angry when people try to make themselves look good through art, either by flashing with big names you bought (ahum, not many people can even afford it) or by talking about it as if the artist is/was his/her best friend. I bet there are a lot of artists from the old days that would be surprised with all the extra meaning the art experts gave their work if they could have had a peek in the future.

Banksy – Kunst voor iedereen

Je hebt waarschijnlijk wel eerder gehoord van Banksy, helemaal deze maand, maar laat me toch nog even een kleine introductie geven. Banksy is een straatkunstenaar ‘zonder gezicht’, met Engeland als basis. Het is misschien moeilijk te geloven, maar na 23 jaar is hij nog steeds niet geïdentificeerd, en, voor zover ik weet, wil hij dat ook absoluut niet. Zijn graffiti kunst kun je zo ongeveer over de hele wereld bewonderen, maar de meeste kunstwerken van zijn hand zijn te bewonderen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Hij begon deze maand, oktober, met een speciaal bezoek aan New York waar hij de stad opsiert met elke dag een nieuw kunstwerk. Je kan dit volgen op de website die gaat over dit New York avontuur. Wat ook grappig is om te doen nu is het nieuws volgen rondom de dingen die hij al gemaakt heeft daar. Ik zag net in een nieuws update dat een van zijn recente kunstwerken geschat wordt op een waarde van 1 miljoen dollar en permanent bewaakt wordt, wat een gekte!

Maar er zijn zoveel meer dingen die hij gemaakt heeft die echt de moeite waard zijn. Een werk, dat ik erg waardeer, is z’n stunt in het British Museum in 2005. Hij bevestigde een klein kunstwerkje van hemzelf aan de muur zonder dat mensen het door hadden. Het grappige is dat het kunstwerk, Early man goes to the market (een stuk steen met een ‘grottekening’ erop), er 3 dagen gehangen heeft voordat het werd weggehaald. En recent heeft hij schilderijen in de straten van New York gehangen, compleet met suppoost en audiogids. Hij schreef er onder anderen over: “Mensen vragen waarom ik een tentoonstelling op straat wil, maar ben je recent nog in een kunstgalerie geweest? Die zijn vol”. Bekijk het hier. Eigenlijk moet je even een kijkje gaan nemen op z’n website, ik denk dat je het echt kan waarderen!

Tot zover de harde feiten, verder met hoe ik erover denk.

Graffiti kunst krijgt normaal gesproken niet zo makkelijk het label ‘kunst’ als bijvoorbeeld een schilderij of beeldhouwwerk. Voor zover ik weet is Banksy een uitzondering, en zijn projecten worden hoog gewaardeerd. Hij gebruikt een medium dat makkelijk overgeschilderd of schoongemaakt kan worden en dat is precies wat hij wil. Mijn interpretatie is dat hij niet wil dat een kunstwerk voor enorm veel geld verkocht wordt, hij wil dat kunst beschikbaar is voor iedereen. Of je nou verstand hebt van kunst of niet, of je geld hebt of niet, je kan zomaar zijn kunstwerk tegenkomen en bekijken. Hij spot niet alleen met de standaarden binnen de kunstindustrie door een stadsmuur te beschilderen in plaats van een schildersdoek, ook inhoudelijk steekt hij (figuurlijk) zijn middelvinger op naar de kunstkenners.

Persoonlijk denk ik dat kunst niet moet worden benaderd met een fluisterende stem of behandeld als speciaal, alleen omdat iemand denkt dat het speciaal is. Natuurlijk is het handig om een klein beetje kennis te hebben van de tijd waarin de kunst ontstaan is en misschien zelfs wat er mee bedoeld werd, maar aan het einde van het verhaal moet het vooral iets zijn dat je beweegt (op welke manier dan ook). Ik kan echt kwaad worden als mensen proberen zichzelf meer status te geven door middel van kunst. Of het nou is door met de grote namen te wapperen die je recent nog gekocht hebt (ahum, niet veel mensen kunnen dit betalen) of dat het is door te praten over de kunstenaar alsof hij/zij zijn/haar beste vriend is/was. Ik weet zeker dat er veel kunstenaars uit vergane tijden verrast zullen zijn over de betekenissen die kunstkenners aan hun werk hebben gehangen als ze even een kijkje in de toekomst zouden kunnen hebben nemen.
